In a combined effort of the USCGA (US Coast Guard Auxiliary) and he USPS (US Power Squadron), the month of May is designated as National Boating Safety Month. The goal of National Boating Safety Month is to encourage and assist recreational boaters to have their vessels inspected through a process termed as VSC (Vessel Safety Check).

Their motto is “boating smart from the start.” This vessel check is available to all boaters at no charge, making it more convenient for boaters to keep their crafts safe. Although National Boating Safety Month is geared toward the recreational motorized boating community, kayakers and paddlers of all types should take this opportunity to follow the lead of the USCGA and USPS.

Everyone knows they should have some form of safety gear onboard, but the secondary focus of National Boating Safety Month is to ensure boaters know how to use it and verify their gear is in working order. When a VSC is performed, USCGA and USPS officials will discuss possible upgrades to equipment or other options such as ground tackle of VHF radios. They will also provide useful tips to boaters such as “flare guns can only be used if the vessel is at least two miles from shore.”

Don’t worry if you think your watercraft won’t pass inspection. Participation in the program is completely voluntary. If concerns are found, inspectors will make recommendations on how to correct the issues. Once inspected, there is a sticker given that the boater places on the port side of the vessel. Please note, this inspection does not prevent boarding by law enforcement, but it certainly gives a good first impression.

Additionally, May 21-27 is National Boating Safety Week. The campaign slogan is “Wear It” which refers to life jackets. Let’s show the boating world that boating safety isn’t limited to commercial and recreational motorized vessels by inspecting our kayaks and safety equipment. After all, paddling smart from the start keeps everyone safe.
