Planning a trip to California or perhaps just wishful thinking? There is so much there to see and do in the Sunshine State, but one of my favorite places to visit is Tomales Bay.

Tomales Bay is a coastal estuary located on the central California coast approximately 40 miles northwest of San Francisco. Tomales Bay is a wonderful destination for any Kayaker or canoe enthusiast. There are two cement boat ramps on Tomales Bay located at Miller County Park and the Golden Hinde Boatel.

There are many breeds of birds and other animals to see. Most popular are the harbor seals. Harbor seals do not migrate, so have been sighted year round. You may also get a glimpse of the majestic Tule Elk. Once huge herds, estimated at 500,000 animals, roamed California, but their numbers were decimated in the 19th century by overhunting and habitat loss.

The tides can be tricky and it is recommended that boaters wear flotation gear. Also, be sure and check the weather before you leave for a day of water sports. Weather changes quickly and cool fogs and winds can spring up on sunny afternoons. The low temperature of the water, average temperatures 55F for the ocean and 65F for Tomales Bay, can bring on signs of hypothermia. So, careful planning and caution are needed, as in any outdoor adventure.

Lodging can be found in the communities of Point Reyes Station, Inverness, Olema, and Marshall. For those outdoor enthusiasts not residing within driving distance, you can find more information on flying with your portable kayak here on the Inflatable Kayak Blog.

Happy Adventuring!
